My 1 yr 2 month old Brussels Griffon needs to have knee surgery to correct a luxating patella. Anybody in our group gone through that? Advice or tips to give me?

Right now I am leaning towards having my current vet perform the surgery. He says he has lots of experience or that he can refer me to a specialist if I want. Did any of you who also had to go through this use a specialist? Have the name of a specialist you think is fantastic?

I have to say that my friends who have gone to specialists for this or other things don't necessarily seem to get better care. And the specialists didn't seem to do a great job communicating to them what is going on. And I have a lot of confidence in my vet. But maybe you have an experience to share that could help me make up my mind.

TIA,
Theresa & poor pupster Anisette
p.s. I will be bringing her to the wine tasting lunch. So she can get out and have some fun before she has surgery and has to spend 6-8 weeks recovering.

Hi ther e
sorry to hear about the upcoming surgery , i have never had it done but know several people who have. but they are in other states so cannot give referals. but they said it went great the pup was great after recovery. but you must follow docs orders for the recovery tho.

Bandit will eventually need this to he has it in both nknees but one is much more severe then the other one.

if yo feel confident with your vet doing the surgery then i don't see any reason not to let him do it.
when is he scheduled for surgery.

keep us posted as to when he has it and how he is doing.

I scheduled her for 24 August. I am going to go ahead and have my current vet do it. Thanks for the good thoughts. She is pretty young so I figured I should go ahead and do it so that it doesn't get worse or cause her to have problems as she gets older. Hopefully she will recover and heal better too since she is young.

I just noticed that the Treasure Hunt is occurring during her recovery time. I am not sure if I will be able to leave her at home. She usually goes crazy if I leave her home alone (even crated). And since I will have to keep her calm and quiet, I may have to just have her with me. And not sure she will be up to handling a Treasure Hunt by that time. Even if we are mainly in the car.

I really really hope I find a way to make it work. If my friend drives and I can hold her, then we might still be able to do this. That will be about 3.5 weeks after her surgery.
